Mangroves are important ecosystems that provide numerous ecological and socioeconomic benefits. The conservation and restoration of mangroves have become a global concern due to their vital role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. In collaboration with Mangrove Nusantara, a volunteer group dedicated to mangrove conservation, and Bendega.id, a sustainable tourism company, a mangrove planting project was conducted on Thursday, June 2, 2022, in Mangrove Sesetan, Bali. The project aimed to restore degraded mangrove areas and raise awareness about the importance of mangroves among school children.
The project involved planting 100 Rhizophora Mucronata mangrove trees, a species known for its ability to tolerate harsh environments and reduce erosion. The planting was carried out by a team of four volunteers from Mangrove Nusantara and Bendega.id, who worked together to ensure the successful establishment of the mangroves. The project location, Mangrove Sesetan, is a degraded mangrove area that requires restoration efforts. By planting mangrove trees in this area, the project aimed to enhance the ecological integrity of the area and provide a habitat for various species of flora and fauna.
Mangrove Nusantara recognizes the importance of educating school children about the importance of mangroves in order to cultivate a sense of environmental responsibility and promote sustainable behavior. Thus, the project involved a group of school children who were taken on a tour of the mangrove area to learn about its ecological significance. The children were taught about the different species of mangroves and their role in carbon sequestration, coastal protection, and biodiversity conservation. They were also given a practical lesson in planting mangrove trees and were encouraged to spread awareness about the importance of mangroves in their communities.
The collaboration between Mangrove Nusantara and Bendega.id was successful in achieving its objectives of restoring degraded mangrove areas and raising awareness about the importance of mangroves among school children. The planting of 100 Rhizophora Mucronata mangrove trees in Mangrove Sesetan is a significant step towards enhancing the ecological integrity of the area and providing a habitat for various species of flora and fauna. The educational component of the project was also successful in promoting environmental awareness and responsibility among school children. The success of this project highlights the importance of collaboration between different stakeholders in achieving sustainable development goals.
